AMD's 3D V-Cache Technology Explained

AMD's introduction of 3D V-Cache technology has caused a massive stir in the PC gaming community. By physically stacking additional L3 cache directly on top of the processor die, AMD has achieved significant gaming performance uplifts.

What is L3 Cache?

L3 cache is a small, incredibly fast block of memory located directly on the CPU. It stores frequently accessed data so the processor doesn't have to wait for the slower system RAM.

The 3D Stacking Advantage

Traditionally, adding more cache meant making the processor die larger, which increases cost and reduces yields. AMD solved this by going vertical.

By stacking cache vertically, AMD's X3D processors boast massive amounts of L3 cache (up to 144MB in some models).
